Gaines Pet Treats LLC, of Birmingham, AL, is recalling 204 bags of Gaines Family Farmstead Chicken Chips (5 oz) due to possible Salmonella contamination. Salmonella can harm both pets and humans who handle the product without proper handwashing.
Symptoms to Watch For:
- Humans: Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), abdominal cramps, and fever. Rare cases may lead to serious issues like arterial infections or arthritis. Contact a healthcare provider if symptoms occur.
- Pets: Lethargy, diarrhea (possibly bloody), fever, and vomiting. Some may show decreased appetite or abdominal pain. Healthy pets can also spread the bacteria. If symptoms appear, consult a vet.
Affected Products:
- Sold through online retailers and small independent pet stores in Alabama, Florida, and Georgia.
- Lot number: 20061124, expiration date: 12/11/25 (printed on the back of the bag).
No illnesses have been reported, but the contamination was detected during third-party testing of a related, unreleased product.
